چکیده

We present a sophisticated gamma-ray reconstruction technique for Imaging Atmospheric Cerenkov Telescopes. The technique is based on the comparison of the raw Cherenkov camera pixel images of a photon induced atmospheric particle shower with the predictions from a semi-analytical model. The approach was initiated by the CAT experiment in the 1990’s, and has been further developed by a new fit algorithm based on a log-likelihood minimisation using all pixels in the camera, a more precise treatment of night sky background noise, the use of stereoscopy and the introduction of first interaction depth as parameter of the model. The reconstruction technique provides a more precise direction and energy reconstruction of the photon induced shower compared to other techniques in use, together with a better gamma efficiency, especially at low energies, as well as an improved background rejection. For data taken with the H.E.S.S. experiment, the reconstruction technique yielded a factor of ∼ 2 better sensitivity compared to the H.E.S.S. standard reconstruction techniques based on second moments of the camera images (Hillas Parameter technique).

Selection and 3D-Reconstruction of Gamma-Ray-induced Air Showers with a Stereoscopic System of Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

A simple 3D-reconstruction method for gamma-ray induced air showers is presented, which takes full advantage of the assets of a system of Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes combining stereoscopy and fine-grain imaging like the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). The rich information collected by the cameras allows to select electromagnetic showers on the basis of their rotational symmetry...

Observations of Galactic Gamma-ray Sources

The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is a system of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes which commenced full operation in the Khomas Highland of Namibia in December 2003 , at an altitude of 1800 m. The experiment is run by an international collaboration of mostly European institutes. It is built for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy, exploiting the energy range abov...

Measurement of the Cherenkov light spectrum and of the polarization with the HEGRA-IACT-system

The HEGRA system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) detects Cherenkov light produced by air showers. The concept of stereoscopic observation with the five HEGRA telescopes allows the reconstruction of various shower parameters, for example the shower direction, the location of the shower core and the energy of cosmic rays. One of the telescopes was modified so that measurements...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Future imaging atmospheric telescopes: performance of possible array configura- tions for gamma photons in the GeV-TeV range

The future of ground based gamma ray astronomy lies in large arrays of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) with better capabilities: lower energy threshold, higher sensitivity, better resolution and background rejection. Currently, designs for the next generation of IACT arrays are being explored by various groups. We have studied possible configurations with a large number of teles...
